9. Screwdriver

24 Jul

In the laboratory, [Thomas] Midgley was a businesslike, hard-driving boss who wanted work well done. Off-hours, he and Carrie blew off pressure partying Prohibition-style. He made excellent gin, and his family thinks he invented the screwdriver, an orange juice cocktail laced with vodka.

— Sharon Bertsch McGrayne, Prometheans in the Lab: Chemistry and the Making of the Modern World (New York: McGraw Hill, 2001), p. 85.

As with the Bloody Mary, this mid-twentieth-century invention is really an eye-opener, a mid-morning bracer, and ideally suited for Sunday brunch. I’m not sure why you’d want to drink it all the time, as Truman Capote famously did.

1 1/2 oz. vodka

4 oz. freshly squeezed orange juice
