Nothing promotes in me a keener sense of the world’s and my own possibilities than does a cocktail. Champagne makes me sad, wine makes me sleepy, but a cocktail tells me kindly, unfailingly—if a little fleetingly—that I am One of the Conquerors. Unless one is of an overpowering self-sufficiency such reminders do not come amiss.
